From the Mind of a 3-Year-Old

Just a few minutes ago, Matthew was picking up some hair things of Jessica’s off the bathroom floor after I asked him to. I had asked him to pick one up, then he saw more and asked, “These too?” I said, “Yes. Those are Jessica’s hair things, huh?!” He responded matter-of-factly, “Yeah. I look like a girl, but I’m not; I’m just a boy,” and left the bathroom.

Recently, Matthew has been saying that baby Jared eats mommy’s tummy. The other day I tried to explain to him that he nurses from mommy’s breasts, and I pointed out where my tummy was and where my breasts are. “No,” he responded. He didn’t believe me; he was still convinced that the baby eats my tummy. If only it were true!!! ;-)

Who's having a baby?

My friend was here earlier and asked Matthew, "Are you excited you're going to have a baby?" He said, "No," and she wasn't quite sure how to respond. After a pause, Matthew said, "Mommy's going to have a baby!" Of course he said no; he's not having a baby, Mommy is! LOL! ;-)

Music-lovin' Matthew

Yesterday, I had just downloaded a free song and was listening to it, and Matthew was sitting on the floor by me coloring in a coloring book. He said something to the effect of, "Is that music, Mommy?" I said, "Yes, it's music." He said, "Thank you for the music, Mommy!" I said, "You're welcome!" and continued to keep some music playing while he just laid there coloring and listening. I asked him if he liked the music, and he said that he did. It was just so sweet. I think it's funny how different each kid is. Jessica has always loved music, but Jacob has always kind of avoided it and covers his ears (and not just from my singing either, hehe). Matthew has always seemed to like it, but this just showed he really does! My sweet, big boy! :-)

More funnies by the boys

Jacob has been watching the "floods" (AKA puddles) outside, and a moment ago he said, "There's another flood. Trouble maker." I laughed about it, and so he explained, "The rain. That trouble maker rain!" LOL! :-)

Jacob recently randomly started telling this silly joke (not quite saying it right), and we couldn't figure out where he'd gotten it from. We finally figured that out (from a Bob the Builder video), but now he's even got Matthew saying it, to the point that when Matthew quite seriously asked me a question this morning, it took me a minute to figure out he was trying to tell me a joke. So here it is, as the boys say it:

"Why was the elephant in the frigerator? ... 'Cause the footprints in the butter!" Hahahaha! They laugh and laugh and keep retelling it. It's so funny. Now for those who don't know the joke, it is supposed to be, "How can you tell an elephant was in the refrigerator? Because of the footprints in the butter!" Either way, it's a pretty silly joke!

Kids just crack me up sometimes! :-)

Matthew has recently gone from sweet, innocent baby to full-fledged BOY! Mischievous, rambunctious, loud, extremely energetic, wrestling with his brother (and he starts it, not the big brother), climbing out of his crib now, trouble-making BOY!!! He's still cute and all, but what happened to my sweet baby who always minded his mommy and daddy?! He'll be 3 soon, so I guess it shouldn't be too surprising! I sure do love that cute, little stinker! :-)

Growing up!

I really am enjoying Jessica getting older; she can do more, and we can enjoy things together that we couldn't before--playing games, reading chapter books... I've even been thinking that it's about time to start teaching her how to play Mormon Rummy--a family tradition! ;-)

However, I'm not quite sure I'm ready for all the "questions" she has been starting to ask. That part of getting older is coming all too quickly for me, and I guess I'd better get prepared for "the talk." I'd rather she talk to me and ask me the questions than for her to talk to some kid at school or some other random person. So far, I have tried to answer the immediate question in the simplest way possible, without having to go into too much detail, but I have to be careful not to put her off too much.

I don't remember ever even having "the talk" with either of my parents. I don't remember even asking those questions. I only remember the school presentations we had, and my mom came to those. I guess she talked with me about them some after, but not until then from what I recall. I think that was about 4th grade and 6th grade they showed us something. Here they do something in 5th grade, which I hope they give parents an opportunity to view ahead of time and choose whether to have their child present or not. Jessica is almost 8, almost done with 2nd grade. I don't think she's going to wait until 5th grade to have "the talk," since she already seems to have so many questions. Of course, my current pregnancy is obviously stirring up some of her curiosity. Aauughh! She's just growing up too fast!

So for those of you reading this, when have you had "the talk" with your daughters? Or when did your mom "talk" to you? EEK!

Jessica funny

The kids are supposed to be cleaning their rooms, but they tend to... uh... play instead. Jessica just a moment ago came to me and said, "The boys need to be in time out." I asked her what was going on, and she said, "They are making me nuts, I tell you! Nuts, nuts, nuts!" LOL! I couldn't help but kind of giggle over that. :-)

Out of the Mouths of Babes... ;-)

I ORIGINALLY WROTE THIS POST BACK ON 2/23/2010 WITH THE INTENTION OF POSTING IT "SOMETIME SOON," WHICH OBVIOUSLY DIDN'T HAPPEN... UNTIL NOW. SO HERE WE ARE A MONTH AND A HALF LATER. I FIGURED IT WAS ABOUT TIME. ANYTHING SAID IN BLUE WILL BE ADDED TODAY. THE STUFF IN BLACK WAS WHAT I ORIGINALLY WROTE. :-)

Jessica has been saying for a looooooong time that she wants a baby sister. She started praying for it. I don't know yet whether it will be a sister or a brother, but her prayers are being answered to the extent of getting another baby in this family. It was not our timing, but the Lord's timing is best. We feel completely at peace that it is His timing and His plan.

Okay, that being said, the kids have said some things lately regarding the baby that are cute/clever that I thought were worth recording and sharing.

Jessica, of course, said she wanted a sister. We told her we could not guarantee it would be a girl. When we asked her, "What if it's a baby brother?" she began to respond negatively, and we quickly reminded her that she would love the baby no matter what, just like she loved Matthew even though he wasn't a girl.

We had asked Jacob if he wanted a baby brother or sister, and we were surprised that he said sister. (Maybe Jessica has brainwashed him! Hehehe!) I figured, knowing kids, that he may very well change his mind. This was several weeks ago. Well, this morning (2/23), Jacob was kissing my belly, like he so often does--so sweet, giving the baby kisses--and softly resting his hand on my tummy, looking so sweet and happy. I said to him, "You're excited to have a new baby, aren't you?!" He said, "Yes, because I want a baby sister!" I said I didn't know whether it would be a sister or a brother, and he very adamantly said, "No, I want a baby sister!" (I think Jessica really did brainwash him!) ;-) He is still quite determined that he wants a sister. He tells me he already has a baby brother; he wants a baby sister. The other night he was saying family prayers, and he said something to the effect of, "Please bless Mommy to have a baby. And please bless Mommy to have a baby girl. And please bless Mommy to have a baby sister... or a baby brother." It was like he got thinking that maybe he should include the possibility of a boy, even though he really wanted a girl. It was cute! Well, then to make it even more funny, after he finished the prayer, Jessica said, "Well of course it has to be a sister OR a brother!" LOL!

The other day, Jessica was asking about the due date (which is not until September--still very far away!). Then she started thinking. She said, "Well, Jacob was one day late, and Matthew was 9 days late. I was one day early, so this one should be 9 days early, so that way it is fair!" LOL! I told her that I liked her thinking and that it sounded like a great plan! I don't know that it will work that way, but it sounds good to me! After all, we have to keep things fair and even, of course! ;-)

Matthew is completely oblivious to any of it. Even though we've told him, he just doesn't get the whole baby thing. He just knows that he is "Baby Matthew"--that's his name, as far as he's concerned! He'll catch on eventually... maybe when the baby comes home from the hospital! ;-)

This last story has nothing to do with the baby but was just kind of funny. This morning when Matthew woke up, he was yelling, "Daddy, I need you!" I yelled back that daddy wasn't here, so he asked, "Where is Daddy?" I told him, and he very insistently replied, "No, Daddy IS here! I want Daddy!" LOL! He wouldn't believe me, and he wouldn't let me get him out of his crib until he finally realized that if I didn't get him out he'd be stuck there. After he finally let me get him out, he explored the house. When I told him I needed to change his diaper and tried to lay him down on the floor, he kicked and fought me and said, "I wanna go back to bed!" I said, "Me, too! Can I go back to bed?" and he said, "No!" Then he decided to let me change his diaper. I asked him if he wanted to go potty on the toilet, and at first he said no, but then he said, "I need to go potty." So he did it! He is soooo funny about changing his mind all the time. I guess it just has to be "his" idea! He's learning and getting bigger! :-)

So now the news is out! Some of you played our little game and figured it out; thanks for playing along; we were just trying to be creative about how we told people! To those of you who didn't figure it out, well, now you know! Hehehe! We still don't know what we are having, other than that it will be a baby girl OR a baby boy! ;-) I'm just looking forward to getting past the icky stage. I am 15 1/2 weeks now, so it shouldn't be too much longer... I hope! I have been very sensitive to smells, so I hate being in my kitchen, which has been difficult on my family as well as myself. Hopefully, that will pass with the icky stage. My due date is September 22, so we'll see how it goes! :-)

For those of you who have not already seen this, here's Baby Gooch smiling and waving for the picture:
